The Wonders of Section Washing

How to Wash Your Hair the Easy Way png

So you think you know how to wash your hair?

Think again.

The unique nature of coarse, type 4 hair requires almost everything to be done in ways that create and maintain optimum hair health. For most of us, that means relearning how to do basic stuff like combing our hair and yes, even washing it too.

Anyone who has washed type 4 hair knows how long it can take for water to completely saturate coarse hair. They also know how frustrating it is when shampoo sits in one spot after it has been applied no matter how many times you attempt to lather, rinse and repeat.

Section washing eliminates wash day frustration by allowing you to focus your cleaning efforts on one section of hair at a time. It is easy to do and can be beneficial because it helps to prevent knots and tangles from forming in the hair and as a result can make the detangling process much easier.

Here’s your step by step guide to section washing:

Step 1: Separate your hair into sections

  • Use your fingers or a wide toothed comb to separate your hair into six equal sections.

Step 2: Twist

  • Take one of the sections and divide it into two equal parts. Take both parts and twist them around one another until you reach the ends of your hair or until the twist is fairly secure. Repeat this process for each of the six sections.

Step 3: Wash

  • Untwist one section of your hair. Saturate it with water and add shampoo. Lather, rinse and repeat until your hair is clean. Use your fingers to remove any knots or tangles that are present in the hair.

Step 4: Retwist

  • Divide your freshly washed and finger detangled section of hair into two equal parts. Twist them around each other until the twist is secure. Repeat steps one through four on the remaining sections.
