The fact is having natural hair means relearning how to do almost everything and doing something as basic as brushing your hair incorrectly can lead to frustration, tenderness of scalp due to excessive pulling and breakage.

Learning the proper way to brush your afro textured hair makes a world of difference. Brushing your hair the right way be done in minutes, can be completely pain free and almost completely eliminates the possibility of breakage.

Here are some steps for making hair brushing easy and pain free for individuals with long, short or medium length hair.

Things you’ll need:

  • Your favorite paddle brush, The Denman Brush or other detangling brush
  • Water or your favorite detangling product
  • Natural oil or hair butter
  • Patience

Step 1: Dampen Your Hair

  • Lightly spritz your hair with water or a water based detangling product

Tip: Don’t get your hair soaking wet. Stop spritzing when your hair becomes soft to the touch.

Step 2: Add a natural oil or hair butter

Step 3: Separate your hair into sections

  • Create small, easy to brush sections. It makes your hair easier to work with and less intimidating.


Step 4: Start with the ends of your hair and work your way up

  • Work your way through the mass of tangled curls at the ends of your hair gently because this is where the length of your hair resides. Use your fingers to undo any knots or tangles your encounter.


Step 5: Braid or twist your hair

  • Braid or twist each section of your hair immediately after brushing is complete so that it doesn’t become tangled again. Unbraid or untwist your hair section by section as you restyle.
